The Healthy U Class of 2016 has collectively lost more than 500 pounds this year and the community is invited to help celebrate their achievement at a Night of Inspiration. The event will be held at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017 at the Stauffacher Theatre on the State Fair Community College campus. It is free and open to the public.

The Class of 2017 will also be announced at the event. Of the 85 individuals who applied to participate in the 2017 program, 25 individuals were chosen as semi-finalists. The semi-finalists will be in attendance to learn if they have been selected as one of 12 finalists.

The top two Class of 2016 students with the highest percentage of weight loss will be recognized and presented with first- and second-place prizes. The total value of both packages is valued at more than $1,500. Prizes include a Best of Bodyworks package from Bodyworks Day Spa, a specialized Expedition bicycle from Pro-Velo, a Keep Collective bracelet from Melissa Boeschen, a set of two ceramic GreenPans, an Oxgord knife set, meal preparation packing containers, a digital food scale, a Luxfit exercise ball chair and various other health-related gifts from the Healthy Living Action Group (HLAG).

“This is going to be a great opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of the fifth Healthy U class and really show people it is possible to lose weight through lifestyle changes,” said Sarah Nail, treasurer of HLAG. “It promises to be truly inspirational to see how these students not only look great, but feel great, too. And, it’s always exciting to announce the students selected for 2017.”

The Healthy U students selected for 2017 will be paired with fitness mentors and nutrition coaches for a year. As with past classes, they will share their journey with the community through media interviews, volunteering, Facebook and community events.

Other community components of Healthy U include public cooking demonstrations, Moving 101 events, grocery store tours, online challenges and a Couch to 5K program that will kick-off in early March. These events will also be free and open to the public.

Healthy U is a project of HLAG, which includes Bothwell Regional Health Center, Katy Trail Community Health, Pettis County Health Center, Boys and Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri and University of Missouri Extension.
