According to WalletHub, the 2016 most popular gift cards are:

1. Amazon Gift Card
2. Visa Gift Card
3. iTunes Gift Card
4. American Express Gift Card
5. Walmart Gift Card

"The gift cards whose popularity increased the most from 2015 to 2016 are the Giant Eagle Gift Card, the Restaurant Gift Card and the Tim Hortons Gift Card," said WalletHub. They also listed the cards that decreased in popularity the most over the past year: the Fandango Gift Card, the Chipotle Gift Card and the Whole Foods Gift Card.

It used to be that giving a gift certificate (before gift certificates became gift cards) as a Christmas present was frowned upon. A lot of people felt like gift certificates were something people only gave when they were too lazy to come up with anything else, or ran out of time before finishing their Christmas shopping. But do people still look at it that way?
