‘The Congress’ Trailer: Robin Wright Takes a Wild, Animated Trip

Following up Drafthouse Films’ Oscar-nominated documentary ‘Act of Killing,’ one of their exciting new releases is ‘The Congress,’ from ‘Waltz with Bashir’ director Ari Folman. Now we have the first trailer for the trippy and contemplative new film starring Robin Wright as an aging actress who makes the difficult decision to sell her image off to Hollywood, unaware of the consequences this new technology will bring.

The film played at last year’s Fantastic Fest film festival, and it’s a doozy. Co-starring Jon Hamm, Harvey Keitel, Paul Giamatti, Danny Huston and Kodi Smit-McPhee, ‘The Congress’ features Wright in a meta-textual story about Hollywood and the cost of aging, as Wright plays a fictional version of herself — a woman whose son is suffering from a degenerative eye disease. So she makes the difficult decision to sell her image off to Hollywood for use in a new form of technology that will keep her appearing as she does now, so they can use her in films forever without the pesky problem of her getting older.

Partially animated, ‘The Congress’ is a highly inventive take on a post-apocalyptic narrative — only the apocalypse is happening in the creative sense. You’ll have to see this film for yourself when it hits theaters on June 27 because it truly is a one-of-a-kind experience.
