State Fair Community College Lady Roadrunners Assistant Coach Buck Scheel has been named the new assistant women’s basketball coach at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. Scheel helped SFCC to a 68-28 record during his three-year tenure with the Lady Roadrunners.

“It was an opportunity to move up the ranks to the NCAA Division II level,” said Scheel. “The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) is a great conference. I know a lot about Northwest from when I coached in Iowa for three years. It has a lot of support from the community.”

Scheel coached eight student athletes who earned All-Region XVI honors and two who were named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Americans during his time at SFCC. He helped the Lady Roadrunners to a Region XVI tournament championship and the program’s first win at the NJCAA national tournament during the 2010-2011 season, when the team finished with a record of 29-6.

Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher said he is excited Buck will have the opportunity to coach at Northwest Missouri State.

“I know he has wanted to get into the MIAA and Division II,” said Bucher. “Buck has been a key part of what our women’s program has accomplished over the last three years, and his recruiting and coaching abilities will definitely be missed.”

“I’m very thankful for the opportunity Coach Bucher and Athletic Director Darren Pannier gave me,” said Scheel. “When I came here, I had three years of experience out of college. This was a big step in my coaching career. Without the experience I gained at SFCC working for Coach Bucher and Director Pannier, I probably wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity at Northwest.”
