Sedalia’s Weekend Events – Weekend of October 20

Here are some of the events going on this weekend. 

Young musicians representing 32 high schools from Missouri and Kansas will participate in the 2012 Festival of Champions as the University of Central Missouri hosts the annual marching band and drum line competition at Audrey J. Walton Stadium Saturday, Oct. 20.

Preliminary marching band competition begins at 7:45 a.m. on Vernon Kennedy Field at Walton Stadium. After lunch from 11:40 a.m. to 12:40 p.m., preliminary competition resumes. The UCM Marching Mules will perform at 4:30 p.m., followed by the preliminary awards presentation. Finals competition begins at 6:30 p.m., with final awards scheduled for approximately 9:15 p.m.

Indoor drum line competition begins at 8 a.m. in the Student Recreation Center, followed by indoor guard competition, which begins at 1 p.m., also in Student Recreation Center.

The public is invited to attend all events. Admission is $13 for general admission and $5 for drum line and auxiliary events. Children under the age of six are admitted free. All proceeds will benefit the UCM Department of Music Scholarships Fund and the Ararat Shrine Temple Hospital Transportation Fund.

Celebrate Teen Read Week at the Boonslick Regional Library.

The public is invited to the opening night of Sock Puppet Theater, performed by the library’s teen advisory group.  The first showing is an extremely abridged (twenty minute) version of the first book in a series about vampires in love.   It’ll be Saturday, October 20, at 8:30 p.m.  in the library meeting room at 219 West Third.  For more information, call 827-7323

The Eldorado United Methodist Church will have a Hayride on October 20.

It’ll be in rural Green Ridge.  They’ll serve hot dogs and chili at 5 p.m. and the hayride will start at dark. Come check out the candy trees.  The evening’s ride is free.  From Sedalia, take Highway Y west to Highway 127, go left on 127 about three miles to Hwy AA, go about six miles to Eldorado Road, and watch for the church sign.  For information, call Ken at 660-281-2978.

The I-70 Cowboy Church will have a trail ride and cookout.

Trail Ride starts at 1:00 P.M., Fellowship and cookout starts at 4:00 PM.  This will be held at the
Ownby Farm, 14098 Pvt 134th Dr, Sweet Springs.  It’s one mile north of I-70 exit 66 on Hwy 127.
Bring your horse or just come for the cookout!  The I-70 Cowboy Church will have their meeting this weekend, with an important change.Join us this Sunday, October 21, for the I-70 Cowboy Church Fellowship & Worship Round-up.  We will meet at the Sweet Springs American Legion Building (corner of Marvia @ Miller – one block south of I-70 exit 66) beginning at Noon with a fellowship meal and music followed by a time of worship.

The Hughesville Fall Festival will take place at Bright Hope Farm on October 20.

It’ll begin at 11 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m.  Admission for seniors over 65 is $1, teens and adults are $2, children 2 to 12 are $1, and under two years of age get in for free.  They’ll have spinning and weaving, painting gourd birdhouses, beekeeping, making soap out of butter, farm tours, roasting pumpkin seeds,  musical entertainment and more.  There will also be a petting zoo, games, two costume contests and food.   From Sedalia, go north on 65 highway for nine miles.  Turn right on Kemp road, go five miles.  Turn left on Farmers City Road, and it’s the first house on the right.  Watch for the signs.

The Shrine Club will be hosting their 1st Inaugural Warsaw Haunted Trail. 

There will be face painting, balloons and games along with the haunted trail.  The cost is $5 per person. The trail is located behind the Shrine Club at 32605 MM Hwy (Wildcat Drive) and it will be open from 7:00 p.m. to 11 p.m.  Advance tickets are available – great gifts for your employees, clients or friends.  Call Steve at 660-723-2029 or Jeff at 660-723-3338.

The Festival of Sharing is this Saturday.

The third Saturday of October is the day that people of faith, from many different denominations all over the state, gather at the Missouri State Fairgrounds, in Sedalia. The groups and families bring money that has been raised and “kits” that have been assembled during the year. Volunteers help to sack rice, beans and potatoes for distribution to Missouri agencies. In the afternoon state agencies bring their trucks and trailers to receive the kits, rice, beans and potatoes to distribute to their clients. Kits, assembled for Church World Service, are loaded on a semi truck to continue their journey to other parts of the world.

The Northwest High School in Hughesville will have their Senior Carnival.

They’ll have Bingo, a Cakewalk, food, prizes, games and auctions.  It’ll be held on Saturday October 27 from 5:30 p.m. on.  It'll take place at the Northwest High School.

The Citizen Jane Film Festival takes place in Columbia. 

Cinephiles of all ages and genders will flock to the Stephens College campus and downtown Columbia for the fifth installation of the Citizen Jane Film Festival the weekend of Oct. 19-21, 2012. The Citizen Jane Film Festival celebrates some of the most daring and accomplished works by women filmmakers while helping carve strong, non-stereotypical roles for women in the film industry, both in front of and behind the camera. Organizers craft an unforgettably festive weekend with interactive panels with filmmakers, in-depth workshops with industry professionals and one-of-a-kind parties and special events.

The Fall Rummage sale at the Saint Paul Lutheran  High School in Concordia is Thursday, October 18 at noon.

It will last til 7:00 p.m. that day, then from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday.  On Saturday they will be available from 8:00 a.m. to noon.  Saturday is brown bag day.  Clothing for all ages as well as household items and baked goods will be available.  Take the Concordia exit; south to the four way stop; go east 1/4 mile to the road on the right. Park in the back of the gym and annex.

The St Paul's Lutheran Church will have a community baby shower. 

Do you have a new baby in the family?  Let us celebrate with you!  Come to St Paul’s Lutheran Church, Sedalia on  Sunday, Oct 21 at 3 pm.  We’ll play new baby games, have gifts for you and your baby and then enjoy some light refreshments.  We want to celebrate with your family.

The first rehearsal of the community chorus for the annual performance of Handel’s Messiah will be Sunday, October 21 at 2:00 p.m. 

It will be held at the First Baptist Church, 200 East Sixth street.  All vocalists are invited.  The Messiah is sponsored by the Sedalia Symphony Society and directed by Sandy Cordes.  It will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 2, at the First Baptist Church.  The performance is free of charge

On October 21, from 4 to 7pm, SpoFest will be having it’s second annual SpookFest Halloween show at the End Zone Sports Bar n Grill in Sedalia.
