Here's  a look at what's going on in our area this weekend. 

On November 7th, the sixth in the monthly series of First Friday events at the Katy Depot will feature “Pearl Harbor Child”—Dorinda Nicholson’s eyewitness account of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941.

Dorinda Makanaonalani Nicholson was born to a Hawaiian mother and Caucasian father and spent her childhood in Hawaii, visiting the mainland for the first time when she was 18 after winning a “Flight to Fame” contest for her hula performance.   Ms. Nicholson witnessed the Japanese attack that launched the U.S. into World War II and has spent many years educating children and adults about the momentous events of those times.  She has published numerous travel articles and authored a series of educational filmstrips for children about the history, culture, industry and land of Hawaii.  Pearl Harbor Child is her first book, followed by Pearl Harbor Warriors, winner of several national awards.  Both are also available as DVDs and will be available will be for sale after the program.  Doors open at 5:30 with refreshments and the presentation begins at 6 p.m.  The event is free and open to the public.  Seating is limited and reservations are recommended.  Call the Depot Store at 826-2932 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The First Friday Series is made possible though a generous gift from Joe Fischer and is hosted by the Sedalia Heritage Foundation.

The Sedalia Young Professionals invite you to join them in serving the community.

They'll have several food drives for the Open Door Food Bank beginning at the Sedalia Walmart from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on November 8.  On November 14 they'll be at the Sedalia Woods from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  Through November 17 you can drop food off at Bryant Motors, McCarthy Toyota, Rick Ball Ford, WK Chevrolet, and Reader's World.  All forms of donations are accepted, but the Open Door's greatest needs are non perishable food items and diapers.

 

This fall, the Smithton AFS (American Field Service) foreign student exchange program will be hosting their  31st annual volleyball tournament at the Smithton School on Nov. 8.

Their 31st annual tournament will be Saturday, Nov. 8. There are tournaments for women’s, recreational, intermediate, and competitive. They have paid refs and T-shirts to the winners. Entry fees are very reasonable. The tournament benefits the Smithton AFS (American Field Service student exchange program) chapter. Three different divisions will be offered: women’s teams at 8:00 a.m., recreation coed teams at  11:00 a.m. and competitive coed teams at 3:30 p.m.For more information, contact Gene Page at 660-343-5789, 620-5790 or genejudypage@gmail.com.

The American Legion and Auxiliary Post 305 will have a barbecue pork and turkey dinner.

It’ll be held from 4:30 to 8:00 p.m. on November 8 at the American Legion Building of Cole Camp.  Advance tickets for adults are $8, and children 5-12 are $3, pre-school children eat for free.  Ticket price goes up one dollar at the door.  Matching funds from Thrivent Financial.   Get your tickets in Cole Camp from Dean’s Barber Shop, Mora Lumber, Heet Gas.

Helen Russell and Company are bringing a bit of Branson to Sedalia.

They will have a performance on November 8  to bring jokes, country music, bluegrass and rock music.  The dinner will be from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at a cost of $7 a plate.  The dinner will consist of a choice of pork tenderloin/chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, corn or green beans, salad and a roll.  The show is from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and the cost of the show is $7 a ticket.  This is a non smoking event.

The Smith Cotton Project Fundraiser in Sedalia this Saturday.

Tickets are $100 and provide two chicken dinners complete with cheesy potatoes, green beans, rolls and dessert, and a chance to win cash – there is a $2,500 grand prize, plus other prizes ranging from $50 to $1,500. There also will be a silent auction for themed baskets. Dinner is 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, in the Smith-Cotton High School cafeteria. All proceeds will be used to pay for the Project Graduation party for the Class of 2014, held the night of Commencement.
