Sedalia’s Own Dickie Doo BBQ is Closing

The following story comes from Denny Perkins over at our sister station, 92.3 BOB-FM.  I have been sitting on this for a while now, just waiting for the right time to talk about it.  Unfortunately, I guess there is no right time and the word is out.  Dickie Doo BBQ, which has been open since 1974, is closing it’s doors after Saturday night’s show with Smokestack Soul.

This is very sad for me and a lot of other people who have supported live music in this town for such a long time.  Dickie Doo owner Rick Hunt has become a very good friend, and his commitment to live music and the blues has been a mainstay around here for a long time.

A lot of people are asking, “Why? What happened?” That’s really up to Rick to talk about but I think the bottom line is Rick and his wife Trudy want to retire.

Together, Rick and I have worked very hard to bring quality acts to Dickie Doo.  Whether it has been a national act like Ana Popovic or just open jams on Thursdays, the Doo was the place to go for live music.  I know that local artists are discouraged by the closing because my phone has been ringing off the hook.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Rick for his friendship and all the great times we have had at the Doo.  You have one last chance to go to an open jam tonight and live shows on Friday and Saturday.

I will continue to do my part in pushing live music with our live music Fridays after we take a couple weeks off.  The Doo is for sale, so maybe whoever takes it over will have the same commitment that Rick had.

Enjoy the rocking chair and fishing pole my friend.  This Saturday night’s Blues Show will be a tribute to the Doo!
