The second annual Cram the Closet drive is underway, and Sedalia's new car dealers have all teamed up to help the cause.

“All of the new car dealers are on board,” said Kyle Herrick with Bryant Motors. “That’s Bryant Motors, WK Chevrolet, Rick Ball Ford, Williams-Woody Nissan and McCarthy Toyota."

Cram the Closet is an initiative that helps meet the needs of residents who are struggling financially by filling the Community Closet with home, hygiene and childcare products.

"These fine car dealers have come together to do our second annual Cram the Closet," said Staci Harrison with Sedalia-Pettis County United Way. "They're helping the Sedalia-Pettis County United Way with our service outreach, to be able to fill the Community Closet that's managed by the Pettis County Community Partnership."

"Things are going great," said Herrick. Bryant Motors has a Dodge RAM 1500 that is being filled with donations. "Our goal is not to fill up one truck bed, our goal is to fill up two truck beds. We're well on our way to the first."

Donations can be dropped off at any of the new car dealerships during regular business hours.

"The products that are stored in the Closet are available to anybody who is at 50% or below the poverty guidelines, are seeking employment, have a job, have a disability, or are going to school, or a combination of all of the above," said Harrison.

Harrison said that those who need help should not be ashamed to pick up the phone and ask for assistance. "This is a hand up, not a hand out. They can give me a call at the United Way office at 826-2980 and I'll be able to help connect them with a variety of resources."
