The Sedalia community gathered at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day services this morning (Jan. 19).

The services featured City Councilwoman Bonita Nash as the emcee, with the invocation done by Elder W.T. Morris and the presentation of the Colors and Pledge of Allegiance led by Cub Scout Pack 202.

There were musical and dance selections performed by the Burns Chapel Free Will Baptist Church Praise Team, Alice Kemp and Amigos de Cristos.

Dr. Marge Harlan delivered the history and biography of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. followed by Judge Deborah Mitchell singing 'Blowin in the Wind.'

Dr. Rhonda Chalfant spoke about the importance that the struggle in American society is not just about racism anymore, but also about gender and social class issues too.

Before the assembly headed on the commemorative march to the Sedalia Municipal Building, the Reverand Rick Adams delivered the benediction.

The services ended at City Hall, where Stephen Boggs talked about the importance of being involved as parents, neighbors and citizens.
