Thursday, August 3 is the 130-year anniversary of the Sedalia Fire Department (SFD) as a fully paid, career fire department, according to Deputy Fire Chief Greg Harrell.

Founded in 1860 as a volunteer department, the City of Sedalia, by ordinance on August 3, 1887 established the Sedalia Fire Department, and immediately hired 11 firefighters to work out of two firehouses to provide 24-hour fire protection.

Currently, 41 personnel are on the roster at the the SFD, manning two engines companies and one truck, responding to approximately 2,500 alarms per year.

The Sedalia Fire Department is under the direction of Fire Chief Mike Ditzfeld. In addition to the fire station at 600 S. Hancock, the SFD's headquarters are located at 2606 W. 16th, which has been in operation since January, 2014.
