Sedalia Council Approves Root Control Bid of $22,164

The Sedalia City Council had a light agenda Monday night, awarding a bid under public works and approving two items under finance.

The Council awarded a $22,164 bid to Duke's Root Control, Inc., noting that it was not the lowest bidder (one bid for $20,754.50 was received), but was approved due to the stellar record Duke's has, and the good working relationship Duke's has had with the City in the past.

An ordinance pertaining to controlled substance and alcohol testing of city employees was reviewed, and broadens when post-accident testing is required.

Also, Council approved an ordinance allowing Empire District Gas Company to supply and sell natural gas (or manufactured gas) within the City. The ordinance allows for the continuation of the current agreement.

Four service awards were noted at the meeting.

Mark Scott, Public Works worker (Sanitation Department) for 35 years of service to the City (did not attend).

Nickolaus Smith, Public Works maintenance operator (Street Dept.) for 15 years of service (did not attend).

Joleigh Melte, executive administrative aid, for 10 years of service to the City's Administration Department.

Daniel Hargrave, driver and engineer for the Sedalia Fire Department for five years of eservice to the City.

June Yard of the Month winners were named, but none attended the meeting to be recognized.

Winners included Jeffrey Knoernschild, First Ward, 1835 W. 3rd; Delores Cantwell, Second Ward, 3203 E. Broadway; Malvin and Reatha Owens, Third Ward, 104 E. 14th; and Marsha & Terry Emo, Fourth Ward, 2800 S. Stewart (grand prize winner).

Susan Harrelson, records supervisor for the Sedalia Police Department, was recognized on her retirement after 23 years, 10 months of service.

Sheree Adair, circulation supervisor for the library was recognized on her retirement after nine years, one month of service.

Anthony Collins was appointed to fill unexpired term of Jamie Bethel on the Housing Authority Board of Directors. Her term expires June, 2019.

Liquor licenses were renewed for Dianna Greene, dba Little Big Horn, 1629 W. Main, Beer & Wine, $75; and Mike Solak, 1613 S. Limit, Beer & Wine, $75.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Mayor Stephen J. Galliher thanked the Sedalia Fire Department, Sedalia Police Department, Pettis County Ambulance District, Pettis County Fire Department and all the citizens who helped out at the two-story residential structure fire that occurred at 1002 S. Grand on Monday night.

“Thank you guys, you did a fantastic job,“ the Mayor said.

Council members Jo Lynn Turley and Don Meier were both absent from Monday night's meeting.

The pre-Council meeting lasted all of four minutes (with no presentations) and the regular Council meeting clocked in at 13 minutes. The Sedalia Council meets again July 17.
