The Sedalia City Council has decided to once again bring the smoking ban to the council chamber floor for discussion and possibly revision.

The smoking ban took effect on Sept. 1, 2013  and was one of the most controversial issues the council faced last year. The council will discuss the ban at a special work session on Feb. 10 with the idea of placing it on the agenda in March.

Third Ward Councilman and Mayor Pro-Tem Bob Cross reminded the council that bar owners had been promised another hearing on the issue when it passed.  Based on the turnout at the initial discussions on the smoking ban, the council chambers will probably see a large crowd of both opponents and proponents of the smoking ban at the Feb. 10 meeting.

Although bar owners might prefer the ban to go away completely, the complaint they have voiced most often is the exclusion of private clubs from the ban, which many say makes for an unlevel field of competition.

Sedalia Mayor Elaine Horn said expects the issue to go to the council for a vote after some citizen input. KSIS will attend the meetings, and will keep you updated on the developments as they happen.
