The Sedalia Business Women (SBW) presented State Fair Community College (SFCC) with the 2018 Business of the Year award at the organization’s annual public relations dinner on Nov. 1 at the Sedalia Country Club.

Accepting the award on behalf of the SFCC was college president and SBW member, Dr. Joanna Anderson. Also present from the college were Randall D. Eaton, SFCC Board of Trustees president and his wife Marsha, and Brad Henderson, Marketing and Communications executive director.

“In its 50 years, State Fair Community College has improved the lives of thousands of people,” said Anderson. “I am very proud to be a part an institution that helps enrich the lives of so many women in particular. We are honored to be recognized by Sedalia Business Women as Business of the Year, and we are proud to serve the higher education needs of Sedalia and Midwest Missouri.”

Anderson followed her comments by asking the audience to raise their hands if they had ever studied at SFCC, to which an overwhelming majority of approximately 60 people raised their hands.

Institutional reporting shows that women make up 62 percent of the student body at SFCC.

Carol Sawyer, SBW Business of the Year committee chairwomen, recognized the significance of SFCC’s role in the community.

“The college is a significant contributor in the economic vitality of not just Sedalia, but all of the surrounding communities with its campuses,” said Sawyer.

The college has campuses in Sedalia, Boonville, Clinton, Eldon, Lake of the Ozarks, Warsaw, and Whiteman Air Force Base.

Earlier in the evening, SBW honored Michelle Sparks as Woman of the Year.

The SBW of Sedalia is a chapter of the Business Women of Missouri, an organization that has existed for more than 95 years, with 17 local clubs across the state of Missouri, with more than 250 members.

According to the SBW website (sedaliabwm.org), the Sedalia Club’s mission is “to achieve equity for all women in the workplace through advocacy, education, and information.”
