Smith-Cotton High School art students were well represented at Wednesday's end-of-the-year art show, held in the upper mezzanine of the S-C gym.

Art teacher Michael Shukers, one of three art instructors at the high school (along with Mr. Heimsoth and Weiss) said that all the art on display was created during the past academic year, with each student exhibiting at least one art piece. Some had many other pieces on display.

Categories included sculpture, pottery, ceramics, painting, color and black-and-white drawings, digital design and photography,

Select juniors and seniors were busy creating art during the one-day, public show as well. “We're showing close to 2,000 works of art, so we have a ridiculous amount of art,” Shukers said, adding that it took about 12 hours to hang and display the artwork in time for the opening Thursday morning. However, the curation of the art takes place throughout the year.

Art I is one of the requirement for first-year students as part of the fine arts program at S-C, with the other options being drama and music. “Outside of that, everything else is an elective, so they want to be there, typically. And many of them are headed towards art careers,” Shukers said, noting that it is awesome to see his students grow and possibly develop a career in the arts. “Over the years, I've had several students become art teachers, graphic art designers, commercial art designers and a few photographers,” he said.

It's apparent that Shukers truly enjoys his job as an art teacher, now in his 15th year at S-C. “It's the blink of an eye. I enjoy what I do and I like passing on the knowledge I have and seeing the kids grow and become better artists, sometimes amazing artists,” he said.

Those wishing to visit may enter through the gymnasium doors. The free show is open until 8 p.m. today (Thursday).
