Every year, the Missouri State Fairgrounds are filled with Native American Pride. People from all over our area and the surrounding states come in for the Robert Woolery Sr Memorial Pow Wow. We have a lot of Native American history and lineage in our area, and it means a lot to so many people.Even if you don't have any Native American in your family history, even if you don't know very much about Native culture, there will be something for you and the kids to enjoy out at the Pow Wow.  They'll have Indian Fry Bread, Indian Tacos, Indian Hot Dogs and Hamburgers.  I think you know how much I'm looking forward to the food part!  I'm easily won over by anything unique and delicious.  They'll also have a great shop with the trader, and you can watch the dances or listen to the drums. The dancers and the drummers are just truly excellent.  It's a whole foray into music unlike anything you've ever heard, and the talent is astronomical.  This year they'll have Alex Esa as the Head Singer, Brian Horse-Whitaker as the Head Male Dancer, and Theresa Flores as the Head Lady Dancer.

The honoree this year is Harvey Payne, the Princess is Chante Falcon, and Bob Woolery will be the emcee.  Roger Crane and Shane Adams are the area directors.  They'll have free admission, free parking, and free entertainment!  The Stomp dance will be after the Friday and Saturday Dances.  Bring your own chairs or you can sit on the bleachers.  All of this is brought to you by the Native American Council for Cultural Awareness.

Don't forget that it'll all be held in the air conditioned comfort of the Ag Building from July 19-21.  The dance starts at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, the Gourd Dance is at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday with Intertribal from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and the Grand Entry at 7:00 p.m.  On Sunday, they'll have the dance at 1:00 p.m.  Those times are approximate, 'cause you know, sometimes you'll get caught up in all the activities and might get distracted.  So don't worry about  missing something because you weren't standing and waiting for the exact time.

You can find out more by finding them on Facebook.  If you're from out of town and need directions or hotel suggestions, they've got those there, too.

Historically yours,

Behka
