Rascal Flatts don't believe in having a lot of downtime. Gary LeVox, Joe Don Rooney and Jay DeMarcus have spent much of the last 14 years performing their biggest hits in packed arenas and amphitheaters -- and they work hard to make sure fans get the best show they can deliver.

"We try to deconstruct our show and look at it and go, ‘What do you think would be fun for them to see, that they haven’t seen us do before?’" DeMarcus recently told The Boot and other reporters. "We try to put on a show that we want to see. No one wants to go year after year after year and hear songs exactly the way they are on the record. We start using our records as templates, and expound on them and give people some surprises here and there and take people through a bit of a roller coaster ride -- take them up, take them down, and take them around some corners.

"It’s tough to do," he adds. "After so many years, there’s only so many different ways you can sing "What Hurts the Most," but we always try to have some fun and see how we can switch it up and make it not only interesting for the fans who are coming to see us year after year, but it also keeps us engaged and interested more."

Finding stellar opening acts also helps. The Flatts are currently out on their 2016 Rhythm and Roots Tour, with Kelsea Ballerini and Chris Lane as openers, and of all the tours they've done, the guys agree that this summer's is one of their best in terms of opening acts -- and not just because of their talent.

"What’s so great about those two is their hearts. They’re such better people than the music they make," Rooney says. "We’ve had an absolute blast with them. They’re so fun, and they’re so real. It’s fun because they’re so excited ... They’re having a ball. They’re awesome people, awesome entertainers. They’re going to be around for a long time."

In between their tour dates, Rascal Flatts are also finishing up their first-ever Christmas album, recording another studio album and working on a restaurant, which is set to open in Cleveland, Ohio, this fall. The concept restaurant will include plenty of the country trio's own culinary creations, some of which have been passed down through generations.

"We sat down and talked about it, and the restaurant developers really wanted to have our personal touch, so we submitted some family recipes, like my Papaw’s chili, Gary has a couple things on there. Joe Don has his mom’s Sex in the Pan on there," DeMarcus reveals.

"It’s a dessert!" interjects Rooney. "It’s a homemade dessert!"
