Phone scammers are contacting area residents claiming to be with the Johnson County, MO Sheriff's Office.

A press release from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office says the scammers are telling citizens they have an active warrant for failure-to-appear for jury duty.

The caller reportedly requests that citizens purchase gift cards to pay the fine for the warrant.

The caller ID shown on your phone will appear as if it’s the Johnson County Sheriff's Office. The scammers use an app that allows them to change the number that will appear on caller IDs.

The Johnson County Sheriff says authorities will never request money to pay for a warrant over the phone.

If anyone receives a call requesting this, simply hang up.
