Mizzou Wheelchair Basketball Team Black Team[/caption]The State Fair Community College Access Office, welcomed the Mizzou Wheelchair Basketball team for an exhibition game, between the Gold and Black teams on Saturday night (April 11). The Mizzou Wheelchair Basketball team is coached by Ron Lykins, who explained the team is part of the Central Intercollegiate Division of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. The team finished fourth this last season and they were excited to showcase their skills to the Sedalia crowd at the Davis Center. Lykins also explained the differences in this type of basketball. "The rules are slightly different with Wheelchair basketball," said Coach Ron Lykins. "The players' chairs are considered part of their bodies. If any part of the chair goes out of bounds, they are considered out. They are allowed two pushes of the chair before they must bounce the ball one time. Able players have to remain in their wheelchairs and can not get up for rebounds to gain an extra advantage."

The Gold team played as the home team, while the Black team played as the vistors. The black team featured Sedalia native Tom Knaus, who played for the Mizzou Basketball Wheelchair Team.

The Gold team led throughout the game, leading 30-23 at the half and ultimately won 59-57. The Black team had a chance to win at the buzzer, but the last second shot was just off the mark, but the crowd gave a great round of applause to all the players involved in this fast paced and even hard nosed game.

The event was hosted by the State Fair Community College Access Office, State Fair Community College Booster Club, State Fair Community College Spirit Squad, State Fair Community College Roadrunners and Lady Roadrunners Basketball teams, West Central Independent Living Solutions, Vocational Rehabilitation and the Center For Human Services.

The fans were treated to a chance to make a free throw in a wheel chair at half time and only one of the five contestants were able to do it with the help of the players and one lucky fan won a Tablet and signed basketball.

The President of State Fair Community College, Dr. Joanna Anderson, started the evening off with declaring today, Disability Awareness Day at SFCC and appreciated all those who came out.

The efforts of Julie McNeal, of the SFCC Access Office, were recognized and thanked for putting this event on and promoting the various services available to those in need on campus.
