Lois and Lex Will Investigate a Superman-Free ‘Metropolis’ in New TV Series

Where there is Gotham, Metropolis must follow. DC's new streaming service has defied all odds to announce yet another Superman-free drama, as a new Metropolis series will pair Lois Lane and Lex Luthor as paranormal investigators before the Man of Steel swooped in.

The new live-action series from Gotham executive producers John Stephens and Danny Cannon will air the first of thirteen episodes on DC Entertainment's digital streaming service in 2019. Like Gotham before it, the new series will follow the title city before its most famous superhero took to the skies. Here's how the network describes Metropolis:

Set in the wondrous and awe-inspiring City of Tomorrow before the arrival of Superman, Metropolis follows Lois Lane and Lex Luthor as they investigate the world of fringe science and expose the city’s dark and bizarre secrets.

So ... Lois and Lex as Mulder and Scully while Clark Kent is busy ... getting his journalism degree? Look, we're all for creative exploration of DC heroes while the actual characters are tied up with Justice League films, but Syfy's Krypton is already making our heads hurt with its time-travel premise, and Supergirl has no problem bringing the Man of Steel out to play now and again. And lest we forget, Smallville already took us to Metropolis once; exposing Clark, Lois and Lex to all manner of supernatural frick-a-frack before tights ever entered the picture.

Metropolis becomes the fourth scheduled series for the new DC digital service, following Titans, Young Justice: Outsiders and an animated Harley Quinn series. Stay tuned for the latest as DC's not-quite-Super drama starts taking shape.
