Lorrie Morgan Opens Up About Opry Membership, Spanking Blake Shelton
Lorrie Morgan is a very proud member of the Grand Ole Opry, and she takes her responsibilities there very seriously. When she stopped by the Taste of Country Nights studio, she opened up about what it takes to keep her membership — and why it might make her spank Blake Shelton.
Morgan was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry back in June of 1984, and ever since then she’s given the legendary circle lots of time, love and attention. Even though that was more than 30 years ago, she still tries to play there at least twice a month. The Opry even brought back their old rule that all members need to play 24 times a year, but Morgan says nobody follows it — not even Shelton.
“He’s gonna get a spanking,” she says, since it doesn’t seem like he keeps up with the rule. “When I see him, it’s over for Blake. Blake, you better look out buddy.”
For those who don’t follow the rule, they get a stern letter from the Opry.
“They send out a letter that says you know, ‘We are kind of demanding that you must be here so many times a year to continue your membership.’ Because it’s just not fair. People want to say, ‘Hey I’m a member of the Opry,’ and not want to come back. The Opry takes dedication and it takes love. It takes love.”
She has an upcoming show at the Opry in February — which is the same month her new album comes out.
“I got a brand new album due out Feb. 12, and it’s my first solo album in about five years. It’s called Letting You Go … Slow. It’s just a beautiful album.”
The record includes songs she wrote, songs she didn’t write, covers and originals, so there’s something for everyone. Letting You Go … Slow drops Feb. 12 — just in time for Valentine’s Day.
