The Sedalia Lions Club presented their plans for an upcoming pub crawl to City Council Monday night as one of six presentations during a work session.

Lion members Ann Adams and Phil Kemp gave the Council details on the event, planned for Saturday, March 17 in downtown Sedalia.

The main reason for the presentation is for ultimate Council approval of an 12-square block area where open containers of alcohol will be allowed during the seven-hour event.

The 2018 Inaugural Sedalia Pub Crawl and Lion Hunt, as it's being billed, will begin at 11 a.m. with a St. Pat's parade. SDDI bed races will follow around noon. The bed races return to Sedalia after an extended absence of several years.

A pub crawl check-in at the Hayden Liberty Center and the Fox Event Theater will begin at 11 a.m. and continue through 1 p.m., or until every participant has been entered and provided with wrist bands, a 16-ounce refillable plastic cup, beads and Lion Hunt punch cards.

The pub crawl itself will last from 1 to 8 p.m., according to Adams. And at 5 p.m., Dirt Road Adddiction will perform a two-hour concert at the Liberty Center. Seating at the Liberty Center is limited to 300, it was noted.

Drawings will follow the concert as well as last call for drink specials. The crowd will then be moved out of Liberty Center and on to participating bars such as Craft Beer Cellar, Fitter's 5th Street, Malone's Irish Pub, The Oak Room, Coach's and Chez When.

Silent auction announcements will be made after the concert, it was noted.

The Lions are also planning on a variety of food trucks and porta potties set up in the perimeter.

The promoters promised the event would end by 8 p.m. and the barricades will come down by 8:30 p.m. with streets reopening to normal traffic.

Kemp noted that he expects to see 1,000 and 3,000 attend the event. And additional security will be hired, he said.

“We have two shifts of extra security from the Sedalia Police Department that we've already locked down,” Kemp said. “They're only two blocks away, so they're pretty confident they can handle it.”

Event chair Adams said local bars will be able to sell food outside and have games and entertainment. “The only thing they cannot do is sell alcohol on the street, so that will be limited to inside. But if the weather is nice, and everyone wants to flow outside, it could be just a big street party,” she said.

Past President Kemp said participants would be able to take their drinks from bar to bar (and avoid open container ordinance, which hopefully be lifted for the seven-hour event).

The Sedalia Lions Club Facebook page will go live Jan. 1 with more details of the anticipated Sedalia Pub Crawl.

City Counselor Anne Gardner noted that the Lions Club has a pretty-well-thought-out plan for the over-21 pub crawl. Adams said she has been planning the event since September.
