Leah Turner, ‘Pull Me Back’ [Listen]
Lyrically, Leah Turner’s single ‘Pull Me Back’ introduces fans to the singer’s vulnerable side. Sonically the song is another high-octane anthem for women, just like ‘Take the Keys.’
The California-raised singer finds herself on the chilly side of a bed shared with her lover in this song. They’ve had a fight, and she wants to make up but isn’t quite ready.
“Feels like there’s miles and miles between us in this bed / We’re lying back to back, a half inch from the edge / I feel you reach across my legs / I wanna wake up, make up but I’m not ready yet,” Turner sings to begin the song.
The first few seconds of ‘Pull Me Back’ includes the tingling of an effervescent guitar before the drum track introduced on her debut single takes over. This — and a big, Cher-esque voice — is becoming this newcomer’s calling card. Quickly she’s defined a sound that’s unique and identifiable. The chorus goes:
“Even when I push you away, I want you to pull me back / When you can’t make it OK, I still want you to wait / You say what you say and I do what I do / At the end of the day I still love you / Even when I push you away, pull me back.”
There’s nothing organic about Turner’s sound so far. Her big (with a capital B-I-G) voice is paired with arrangements equally stout and commanding. This girl won’t fail to get noticed, but it's the lyrics and her story telling that will ultimately hook fans.
Why Fans Will Love It: 'Pull Me Back' is emotionally deeper, but sonically very similar to Turner's debut single 'Take the Keys.' It should expand her fan base.
Key Lyrics: "You say what you say and I do what I do / At the end of the day I still love you / Even when I push you away, pull me back."
Did You Know?: 'Pull Me Back' is the second single from Turner's self-titled EP.
