Here’s Why I Can’t Stand Joe Buck [OPINION]

The World Series is underway soon, and we’re going to be hearing a lot of Joe Buck. Well, I think Joe Buck is one of the worst commentators ever. He’s terrible. Yeah, I said it. If I was as bad at my job as he is, I don’t think I’d have a job. Then again, I don’t have the advantage of riding daddy’s coattails either. I know this might not be a popular opinion in Missouri, but I have to get this off my chest.

So if you don’t know who Joe Buck is, he’s a pretty big sports commentator for Fox sports, mostly baseball, but football too. His dad is the legendary Jack Buck, who I never got to listen to much, but from what I understand was a great broadcaster for St. Louis. Joe Buck followed in his father’s footsteps, calling games for the St. Louis Cardinals origination before making it to the national level. He’s been calling games for a long time and is pretty well known. As far as I can tell he’s pretty well liked in Missouri being the hometown guy and the son of a legend, but outside of the state he has quite a few haters, and I am one of them.

One thing Joe did recently that really infuriated me: During Game One of the ALCS between the Boston Red Sox and my Detroit Tigers, Anibal Sanchez had a no-hitter going. If you’re not familiar with baseball tradition, it’s a huge tradition that you don’t talk about a no-hitter while it’s happening. You just DON’T. It’s a jinx. Show a picture of the scoreboard without saying anything, you say something like, “Not many Sox players on base tonight,” something like that, but you never ever flat out say “no hits.” Well, good ol’ Joe did. At the end of the fifth inning, he just straight up said, “Sanchez with 10 strikeouts, the Red Sox with no hits tonight.” Seriously dude?!?!? He mentioned it again later on in the game, and of course, the Tigers lost the no hitter thanks to his jinx. Good job buddy. How do you screw that up when you’ve been calling games for almost 25 years, and you’ve been around the game your entire life?

I’ve hated Buck long before that though. Why? He’s incredibly boring. His voice is a monotonous drone, and he’s never excited about anything. It can be the most amazing play in the history of sports, and he’ll sound like he’s ordering food from a drive-thru. He said in an interview once about how he was thinking about how he was going to make a big call and get it just right, and that’s the problem. He over-thinks it. Don’t think about it, just let the excitement flow man! Oh that’s right, he doesn’t actually get excited, because he doesn’t even like sports that much. He said in another interview once he rarely watches games if he’s not calling them, and he prefers shows like The Bachelorette.

He’s gotten on my nerves for years. He’s especially bad at football. His call of the famous David Tyree “Helmet Catch” in the 2008 Superbowl between the New York Giants and New England Patriots was possibly the worst call EVER. Every single thing he says sounds exactly the same.

Listen to the video below for a hilarious bit by comedian Jay Mohr doing an impression of Joe Buck and how everything he says is the same tone, no matter how exciting. It’s less than a minute long, and definitely worth the time.
