The NAB Show is basically anyone involved in any part of broadcasting’s dream come true. I remember walking in for the first time last year, seeing all of the radio equipment and drooling everywhere. It’s THAT awesome. I feel like me explaining it doesn’t do nearly as much justice as actually being there. 

The coolest piece of equipment that I stumbled upon this year was called the Stinger Mini for iPad from Simian BSI. Now I’m a fan of anything Simian related, but Stinger is every ADD kid’s best friend. Basically, there were 20 different sounds you could hear. Me, being the mature person that I am, pressed all of them at once.

You’re probably wondering why I felt the need to blog about this. I’ve always been a fan of radio and the different aspects to it, but the NAB Show added to my love of radio and broadcasting in general. The NAB Show is a rewarding experience and I’d advise anyone interested in broadcasting to try and make the trip out to Las Vegas at least once. You won’t regret it.

No child or family ever receives a bill from St. Jude.  Once a child is accepted as a patient, the only focus is on curing their illness.  As I watched patients and their parents walk through the halls of the hospital, I saw no tears or frowns.  Only smiles and determination.  That is noteworthy, considering at some point the parents heard the words “Your child has cancer.”

Below are some pictures taken during this year’s trip.  No patients or families could be photographed due to privacy laws.

The weather wasn’t ideal, but you guys came out in numbers, with over 400 in attendance, including landowners, kids that hunted with us, Wounded Warriors guides and our friend Eric Statler, the quadriplegic veteran who we’ve been hunting with.  It was a packed house with an awesome auction run by John Dick and games run by the State Fair Strutters, NWTF Chapter and the Lovely Ladies from the Hair and Spa Salon of Sedalia.  Thanks to Terri Hunter and her husband Donnie for the great job on the silent auction, and of course, Dale Malone and the staff at Dukes & Boots for serving the adult beverages, along with the awesome food from Table of 5 catering.  It was definitely a community supported event that will fund turkey and deer hunts for our youth, those with special needs, the Wounded Warrior hunts and our field days, so again, thank you.

Now, the California Shooting Club Archery 3D Shoot is this Sunday, Jan. 20.  We’ll be leaving Sedalia around 8 a.m. from the radio station if anyone wants to follow us down there.  On Jan 26 and 27, we have the Icebreaker Classic with the Saturday competition at State Fair and and at Twin Lakes on Sunday, with daily trophies, overall trophies and door prizes.  February 2-3 is the 2013 Cabin Fever Sports Show where there’ll be something for everyone, including hunter and actor Marshall Teague and the first ever Pop Up 3D Archery Shoot for cash, prizes and trophies.  Remember, you must bring your own bow and at least five arrows.  Rusty Toad Archery will be there so you can check your bow and get some some tips from the pros.  If you have a new business, hunting club or want to get involved with the show, booth space is going fast, so sign up here.

So, our new Operations Manager, Doug, decided to be proactive and try to put them together.  It was a fine task, and he did it with aplomb. Now admittedly there was some head scratching, and some under the breath confusion, but it ended up happening eventually. He even let me have the bubble wrap, so I could pop all the bubbles.

They had just done some remodeling and wanted to show off all the new bells and whistles! We were there to give out prizes and help with the fun. Here’s some of what went down on Friday afternoon.

I was told by Mrs. Tonya Edgar, a 3rd grade teacher, that the tradition of making gingerbread houses goes back at least 15 years, if not more. Students created their masterpieces with seven graham crackers, frosting and a paper plate. These were the foundation of the gingerbread homes that 80 students made.

Along with the foundation, kids could use candy canes, red hots, peppermint candy, hard candy, M&M’s, chocolate chips, gumdrops, marshmallows, Skittles, licorice, Starburst, Hershey Kisses, sprinkles, Gummy Lifesavers, powdered sugar and more.

About 10 parents came to volunteer to help the kids, which meant everything from setting up to cleaning up, and one brave person made the frosting for all 80 kids.

It was a lot of fun to help bring some cheer to the kids and assist with the kids in making sure the gingerbread house stayed together.  I even helped one girl put her gingerbread house back together after it fell just as she was putting the finishing touches on it.

I think volunteering time is important, and if you can do it with your kids, all the better.  There were several moms and dads volunteering at the event, and without them, I don’t think the hour and a half given to complete the gingerbread houses would have been enough.

I think this was the holiday cheer I needed to get back into the holiday spirit, and I’m sure the teachers needed that lift too with this being the first day of new security at Skyline Elementary.
