You've probably heard of the names of these synthetic cannabinoids. They're often called Spice, K2 or fake weed. They've been wrecking havoc in Illinois.

While no cases have been reported in our area, according to the Illinois Department of Health (IDPH), these synthetic cannaboids are linked to 70 cases of severe bleeding, including three deaths.

As of April 12, 2018, according to the website, IDPH has received reports of 122 cases, including three deaths, linked to an outbreak, since March 7, 2018; cases report using synthetic cannabinoid products before suffering from severe bleeding.

According to the IDPH website, Synthetic cannabinoids are human-made, mind-altering chemicals that are either sprayed on dried, shredded plant material so they can be smoked or sold as liquids to be vaporized and inhaled in e-cigarettes and other devices. They are sold for recreational drug use with claims they will provide the user the effects of cannabis.

The site simplemost.com reports that health officials warn that synthetic cannabinoids can have serious and sometimes deadly side effects, and anyone who has a reaction such as severe bleeding should call 911 or be taken to the emergency room immediately.
