DESCRIPTION:Deborah Curtis\, the provost and chief learning officer at the University of Central Missouri\, presents the opening of the fall Department of Music performance season as she hosts the 2012 Provost’s Faculty Showcase at 7:30 p.m. Friday Sept. 21\, in Hart Recital Hall.    The public is invited to attend\, free of charge. The annual event provides an opportunity for the campus and local communities to enjoy the depth of experience and talent of the music faculty.    Opening the program\, Joan Ferguson\, instructor of harp and a new member of the UCM music faculty\, will perform “Etude de Concert: au Matin” by Marcel Tournier on harp\, followed by Eric Honour with  a new music presentation of “Number Stations for Alto Saxophone” by American composer Paul Leary\, featuring video accompaniment. Tenor Jacob Sentgeorge\, accompanied by Mia Hynes on piano\, will then perform “Nebbie” by Ottorino Respighi.    Michael Bersin\, on cello\, accompanied on piano by Tian Tian\, will present “Serenade\, Op. 54\, No. 2\,” and “Spinnlied\, Op. 55\, No. 1” by David Popper\, and a quintet of Sheri Mattson\, oboe; James Gai\, clarinet; Gary Moege\, horn; Charles Wines\, bassoon; and Mia Hynes\, piano\, will perform “Largo\, Allegro moderato” from Mozart’s “Piano Quintet in E-flat Major.”    Following intermission\, Hynes and Tian will perform in a piano duet of “Ragtime alla turca\,” arranged by Greg Anderson from music originally composed by Mozart. Tenor David Adams will then present “The Cold Earth Slept Below” from “The Everlasting Universe” by local composer John Mueter\, a member of the music faculty at the University of Missouri-Kansas City\, followed by Mattson’s presentation of “Two Pieces for Oboe” by Ross Edwards.    Soprano Stella Roden\, accompanied by Tian\, will present “O del mio amato ben” by Stefano Donaudy\, and closing the program will be the presentation of Wayne Shorter’s “Black Nile” by David Aaberg on trumpet; Moege on guitar; John Check on bass and Michael Sekelsky on drums. SUMMARY:Friends of Music Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Warrensburg Friends of Music will present two internationally renowned classical music artists\, Valentina Igoshina on piano and David Halen on violin\, in concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday\, Oct. 9\, in the University of Central Missouri's Hart Recital Hall.  The event is the opening concert of the 2012-13 UCM Department of Music  Piano Series. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.  Igoshina is a graduate of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow\, and a  laureate of several international piano competitions\, including the  Rachmaninoff Piano Competition in Russia\, the Jose Iturbi International  Piano Competition in Spain\, and the Rubinstein Competition in Poland. She  has appeared throughout Europe as a soloist\, including engagements with the  Concertgebouw Royal Orchestra in Amsterdam\, the BBC Scottish Orchestra\, and  the Santiago Orchestra in Chile. Her recordings can be found on the Warner  Classics International label.  Halen\, a Warrensburg native\, serves as concertmaster of the St. Louis  Symphony Orchestra and\, as of fall 2012\, as a member of the faculty at the  University of Michigan School of Music. During the summer season he serves  as concertmaster and faculty member at the Aspen Music Festival. He also is  distinguished visiting professor at Yale University\, as well as the Robert  McDuffie Center for Strings at Mercer University.  In Missouri\, Halen serves as the artistic director of the Innsbrook  Institute and the Missouri River Festival of the Arts in Boonville. He is a  recipient of UCM's Distinguished Alumnus Award\, honorary doctorate. He and  his brother Eric\, who is the associate concertmaster of the Houston  Symphony\, studied with their father\, the late Walter Halen\, UCM professor  emeritus of music.    The Igoshina/Halen recital is made possible by the Warrensburg Friends of  Music\, the Missouri Arts Council\, the UCM Department of Music\, the Glore  Family Foundation and the Arnold\, Mo.\, Food Pantry.  The Warrensburg Friends of Music is dedicated to supporting musical  endeavors that enrich the Warrensburg community and surrounding areas\,  providing support for area events such as the Warrensburg Community Band\,  Warrensburg Community Chorus\, Warrensburg Junior Community Chorus\, the UCM  Student Chapter of Music Teachers National Association\, the Smithsonian  Institution's New Harmonies travelling exhibit\, and Department of Music  recitals by Darryl Duff and Carolyn True. SUMMARY:UCM Festival of Champions
DESCRIPTION:Young musicians representing 32 high schools from Missouri and Kansas will participate in the 2012 Festival of Champions as the University of Central Missouri hosts the annual marching band and drum line competition at Audrey J. Walton Stadium Saturday\, Oct. 20.    Preliminary marching band competition begins at 7:45 a.m. on Vernon Kennedy Field at Walton Stadium. After lunch from 11:40 a.m. to 12:40 p.m.\, preliminary competition resumes. The UCM Marching Mules will perform at 4:30 p.m.\, followed by the preliminary awards presentation. Finals competition begins at 6:30 p.m.\, with final awards scheduled for approximately 9:15 p.m.    Indoor drum line competition begins at 8 a.m. in the Student Recreation Center\, followed by indoor guard competition\, which begins at 1 p.m.\, also in Student Recreation Center.    Missouri schools registered to compete include Concordia\, Cole Camp\, Warsaw\, Centralia\, Monett\, Tipton\, Butler\, William Chrisman\, Odessa\, Rock Bridge\, Fort Zumwalt East\, Springfield Hillcrest\, Pleasant Hill\, Park Hill\, Platte County\, Branson\, Fort Osage\, Raytown\, Warrensburg\, Lee’s Summit West\, Raymore-Peculiar\, Lee’s Summit and Lee’s Summit North.    Kansas schools competing include Winfield\, Blue Valley Southwest\, Shawnee Mission North\, Washburn Rural\, Topeka West\, Shawnee Mission West and Buhler.    The public is invited to attend all events. Admission is $13 for general admission and $5 for drum line and auxiliary events. Children under the age of six are admitted free. All proceeds will benefit the UCM Department of Music Scholarships Fund and the Ararat Shrine Temple Hospital Transportation Fund.

SUMMARY:SFCC Spring Concerts
DESCRIPTION:The State Fair Community College Music Arts program will celebrate March as “Music in Our Schools Month” by presenting spring concerts at 7:30 p.m. March 5-6 in the Stauffacher Theatre on campus.    The program will feature the 30-member SFCC Chamber Choir\, the 18-member Jazz Choir and the 18 instrumentalists in the Jazz Runners performing music from the classical to the Big Band eras\, including some classic rock ‘n roll.    Choral selections will include the jazz standards “L-O-V-E\,” “Summer Samba” and “Happy Together” as well as music from Russia and Scandinavia\, the Broadway stage and the American heartland.  Instrumental selections will feature the band’s interpretations of songs like “Make Me Smile\,” “Shiny Stockings” and the Latin rhythm-infused “Conga.” The choirs are under the direction of Ron Sayer\, Music Arts program coordinator\, and the Jazz Runners is under the direction of Kevin Holbert\, Music Arts adjunct instructor. The choirs are accompanied by SFCC staff members Gwendolyn Kappelman and Cynthia Groff. Tickets are $8. DESCRIPTION:The Andrew Lloyd Webber production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat will be onstage at the historic Liberty Center Association for the Arts April 4-7 and 11-14\, 2013.  Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased at the Liberty Center\, 111 West 5th Street in historic Downtown Sedalia or by calling (660) 826-2899.  The show is an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical with lyrics by Tim Rice.  This family-friendly story has a universal theme with upbeat music sung through the entire show.  There is no spoken dialogue.  On opening night\, Thursday\, April 4\, the string students of Wilken Music will perform in the front lobby under the direction of Ms. Barbara Schrader.  Wayne Bradley is the shows director\, Ashley Cook is the Assistant Director. Britt Faaborg is the vocal director. SUMMARY:SFCC Musical Showcase
DESCRIPTION:The students in State Fair Community College’s Music Arts program will present their spring musical showcase at 7:30 p.m. May 3-4 in the Stauffacher Theatre on the Sedalia campus.  The SFCC Jazz Band will perform a kaleidoscope of musical styles\, from Latin-infused jazz to Big Band jazz standards and contemporary jazz selections. One of the selections\, “Tank (A Cowboy Beebop)” by composer Yoko Kanno\, was arranged by SFCC graduating student Carl Wilken as a theory and arranging project.  The choirs will showcase their favorite selections from the fall and spring semesters as well as several new selections. Featured selections include “O Fortuna” from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana\, the Scottish folksong ‘Loch Lomond’ and “Omnia Sol” by Randal Stroope.  Tickets are $8 for the public and may be purchased online at www.sfccmo.edu/thearts. DESCRIPTION:The Cole Camp Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a "Bikes\, Blues &amp; BBQ" event for Saturday\, May 11 in downtown Cole Camp.    The motorcycle show will feature various classes of bikes and awards will be given in each class and a trophy will got to the bike judged as best of show.  Registration for the bike show will be from 11:00 a.m.  until 1:00 p.m. on North Maple Street in downtown Cole Camp\, with judging to begin at 1:00 p.m. The barbecue contest will be held on Maple Street and includes categories for pork ribs\, brisket\, chicken\, and pork.  Sampling is available from noon to 1:15 p.m. Live music will be featured in the Jaycee Gardens performed by the "Full Moon Band".  The Cole Camp Jaycees will also host a beer garden that afternoon.  For the most up to date information\, visit the Cole Camp Bikes\, Blues and BBQ page on Facebook.  Partial funding for the event has been provided by the Benton County Tourism Commission.
