The Missouri Department of Social Services (DSS) will sponsor a free eye screening clinic in Pettis County on Thursday, November 20, 2014. The clinic will be held at Parkview Christian Church at 1405 E. 16th Street in Sedalia, Missouri from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. Persons interested in taking advantage of this free program are encouraged to call Pettis County Health Center at 660-827-1130 quickly to schedule an appointment. If there are not enough appointments scheduled, the clinic will be cancelled.

The examinations will be conducted by the University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics’ Department of Ophthalmology of Columbia, with assistance from the DSS Prevention of Blindness Unit. The doctors will not be able to write prescriptions for eyeglasses because the equipment is too delicate to move however, persons attending the clinic will be screened for such visual problems as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy (disease of the retina) and macular degeneration as well as malformations or malfunctions of the eye, such as strabismus (crossed-eyes) and other vision problems.

Those attending the clinic diagnosed as having a visual problem requiring specific treatment and further examination will be referred to local eye specialists for follow up. Individuals who meet Prevention of Blindness (POB) Program eligibility guidelines will be assisted by POB program staff with necessary eye care services.
