The Columbia Police Department is dispatching a call from hibernation for all Polar Bears! The 8th Annual Polar Plunge will be held on Feb. 21, 2015. Brave men and women from around the area will don costumes and swimwear and take "polar" dips into Bass Pro Shops Lake. Their Reason for Freezin' . . . the athletes of Special Olympics Missouri! All proceeds from the event benefit the organization. This year’s goal is 500 Plungers and $85,000. Organizers across the state hope to break the million-dollar mark this year with 14 events.
The Polar Plunge is open to anyone 10 years or older who is a fan of having a good time for a good cause. The event is hosted by the Columbia Police Department and will take place at Bass Pro Shops Lake (3101 Bass Pro Drive). Day-of registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and the Plunge starts promptly at 2:00 p.m. There will also be a PRE-check in on Friday, February 20, from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. at the SOMO Central Area Office (903 Old 63 North-Suite A, Columbia).
Each participant is required to raise a minimum $75 to participate in the Polar Plunge. All plunging Polar Bears will receive an official Polar Plunge commemorative shirt. Participants can also receive incentives for reaching fundraising goals: $300 – I Cool Backpack Cooler or Essential Full Zip Jacket, $500 – Yerba Knit Quarter Zip or Brookstone Compact Portable Power (or any $300 level incentive), $1,000 – Belford Jacket or Wenger Tech 4-wheeled Spinner Carry-on (or any $300 or $500 incentive), $2,000 – Ozark Insulated Jacket or Kenneth Cole Duffel Bag (or any $300, $500 or $1,000 incentive). No wet suits are allowed and shoes are required.
