We’re saddened to report that Edward Herrmann, best known for roles in ‘Gilmore Girls’ and horror classic ‘The Lost Boys,’ has passed away this morning at the age of 71. Herrmann’s career spanned over 40 years, from his role in 1973's ‘The Paper Chase,’ to more recently starring in the ‘Town That Dreaded Sundown’ remake. On the last day of 2014, we’ve lost yet another great actor.

It’s been a tough year, as we’ve lost many beloved actors already, and today brings another loss: that of Edward Herrmann, one of those awesome “that guy” actors who further cemented his place in pop culture later in life, starring in the hit series ‘Gilmore Girls.’

TMZ reports that Herrmann passed away this morning at the age of 71, following a battle with brain cancer. He leaves behind a wife, three children, and over four decades of wonderful acting work. Herrmann made his film debut with an uncredited role in 1971's ‘Lady Liberty,’ and went on to star in Mike Nichols’ ‘The Day of the Dolphin.’ (Nichols also recently passed away, leaving behind a legacy of great films.)

Herrmann also appeared as FDR in the 1982 film ‘Annie,’ and starred in ‘The Purple Rose of Cairo,’ ‘My Boyfriend’s Back,’ ‘Richie Rich,’ and ‘The Lost Boys.’ Additionally, Herrmann left behind a lovely career on television, appearing in ‘The Practice,’ ‘Oz,’ ‘The Good Wife,’ and most memorably playing the role of Richard Gilmore on ‘Gilmore Girls.’

As one of our most cherished “that guy” actors, Herrmann’s presence in film and on television was always certain to elicit a joyful response. He will most definitely be missed.
