I'm sure you remember The Devon’s Beat 5k Run/Walk that was held at the Lincoln Football Field earlier this year. It was a huge success, and benefited research in SADS.  SADS is Sudden Arhythmia Death Syndrome are genetic heart rhythm abnormalities that can cause sudden death in young, healthy people who are undiagnosed. Sudden arrhythmia death syndromes cause sudden death in young, apparently healthy people.

These conditions can be treated and deaths can be prevented. It is estimated the over half of the 4000 SADS deaths each year of children, teens or young adults had one of the top two warning signs: a family history of a SADS diagnosis or sudden unexplained death (usually undiagnosed and untreated) of a family member, or fainting.

They raised quite a bit of money with that walk and run, and now that money is being put to good use.  They'll be having some screenings with doctors coming down from St Luke's this week. They're looking for kids aged 13-18 to get screened. If your child is athletic or you're concerned about the possibility of SADs, you might want to listen to my talk with Devon's Mom, Angela Parrott, about the event and how you can get your child screened.

So once again, the event will be held at the Clinton Golden Valley Rehab and Wellness Center at 1200 E. Ohio in Clinton on October 25. They'll start screening people by appointments beginning at 8:30 a.m. If you need more information, or you want to make an appointment, call Angela at 660-547-3355. Keep up with what's happening with Devon's Beat and the updates on screenings for younger kids at their Facebook, and you can join the event.

Heartily yours,
Behka
