Motorists may have seen a large covered wagon drawn by two horses traveling southbound on South Limit this morning (September 19).  The wagon was passing though Sedalia on a journey across the country known as the Freedom Trail Ride, honoring the fallen members of the military and supporting children with disabilities.

According to their Facebook page, the "Freedom Riders" are traveling 800 miles from Decatur, Iowa to Vicksburg, Mississippi.  They will be taking Hwy 65 S past Little Rock, Arkansas to cross the Mississippi River at Greenville, Mississippi before taking Hwy 1 over to Hwy 61 S on down into Vicksburg.

Many of the riders are veterans themselves.  This is the 2nd annual ride and  raises money for an annual event in Jackson, Mississippi called "Horses 4 Handicapped."  The organization gives about 3500 kids of all ages and disabilities a chance to enjoy horse riding.

Ride organizer Herman Williams spoke briefly to KSIS's Jack Miller about the ride.

The Freedom Riders posted this description of themselves on their Facebook page:

We are a group of horse men and women joined together to celebrate our love for our Heavenly Father, our pride for our beloved country and honor that any and all soldiers have given to us. We are dedicating this ride specifically to Vietnam veterans but also all other veterans and current military personnel fighting to help us keep the freedom that all other veterans have fought so bravely to help us gain and keep for many years.

Donations for the veterans can be sent to Bank Of The West, PO Box 70, Lamoni, IA 50140.  Checks need to be made out to Freedom Trail Riders.  For more information, call 601-618-0467.
