On Tuesday it was announced that Suicide Squad director David Ayer would re-team with Harley Quinn actor Margot Robbie for another DC supervillain movie, this time focused on the female villains of Gotham City, and titled Gotham City SirensThe film shares a title with a recent DC Comic, but if you're unfamiliar with the run or the concept behind it, we can get you up to speed with a Crash Course.

Gotham City Sirens launched as part of DC's "Batman Reborn" line in 2009, following the death of Bruce Wayne in Final Crisis and the debut of the new Batman and Robin --- namely former Robin Dick Grayson as Batman, and Batman's secret son Damian as Robin. The series launched under creators Paul Dini and Guillem March, and starred Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and Catwoman teaming-up to watch each other's backs and to form a makeshift crime family.

The early Dini/March storylines also featured The Riddler as a supporting character under Poison Ivy's control, and Hush appeared briefly as a villain. The series also saw the return of The Joker's pre-Harley Quinn sidekick Gaggy, who wanted revenge for being replaced.

Dini was succeeded by Tony Bedard and later Peter Calloway, and later issues were drawn by Andres Guinaldo and Peter Nguyen, among others. Later storylines featured Catwoman's institutionalized sister Maggie and appearances by Talia Al Ghul and Zatanna.

The series ended with a storyline focusing on the team almost breaking up due to Catwoman's love for Batman and Harley's devotion to The Joker, but realizing they're better off together than pining over their loser ex-boyfriends. Gotham City Sirens ended with #26 when DC relaunched its entire line in 2011, and while the characters were scattered to separate books, Poison Ivy now feature as a supporting character in the current Harley Quinn ongoing.

The concept of the Sirens actually predates the comic by nearly ten years, going back to the 2000 web series Gotham Girls. Also overseen by Dini, Gotham Girls took place in the same DC Animated Universe as Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimitedand over the course of three seasons of ten episodes focused on Harley, Ivy and Selina, as well as Batgirl, Zatanna and Renee Montoya.

It's early days for the development of the Gotham City Sirens movie, so we don't know what elements it might borrow from the comics. It might even take the name and go in a completely different direction. But a really great team-up movie starring Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Margot Robbie's Harley has the potential to be a lot of fun.
