It's one of those things:  you never want to think about being in a situation where you will need a first responder.  Whether it's the fire department, the police, an ambulance... we all hope we never need their services. But, of course, we do.  Sometimes things just happen, and these people are there to step up and help.  They often put their lives in danger to help people they've never met.  We all appreciate their efforts, we just don't get to thank them as often as we'd like - mostly because we're trying not to think about needing to call them. After all, who WANTS to get a speeding ticket, or deal with a kitchen fire, for example?  But when we go about our lives this way, it can get intimidating to think about them as human beings as opposed to service.  And that also means that our kids can be afraid of the very people who are there to help them.

So that's where an event like the one this weekend is coming from; we want to be able to meet with and thank our emergency services without having to actually have them by to do the job.  It's so rare to be able to just stop, sit and chat with them without some kind of dire emergency.   We need to take a moment and just celebrate our fortunate situations  at the moment.  That's why there's going to be a big celebration out on the fairgrounds.

It's going to be a picnic lunch with free food from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and the celebration will be all day, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  There will be no admission fee, but you're allowed to donate to Child Safe while you're there (another group you're thankful for - but hope to never need).  Come and meet and greet the men and women who support you and a daily basis with their lives.   Bring the family to meet the Sedalia Fire Department, the Sedalia Police Department, the Missouri Highway Patrol, the Pettis County Ambulance District, the Pettis County Sheriff's Department, the Pettis County Fire Department, and Air Evac.   It'll be in the Northeast Corner of the Missouri State Fairgrounds, and I'll be out there broadcasting live and giving away prizes while you get to sit and eat with these great people.   If you have any questions, or if you want to know more about the event or how you can help, call Greg Hopper at 660-826-8600.

Picnicly yours,
Behka
