City Collected Less Trash in 2017; Recyclables Up

Kevin Wade, chairman of the Citizen's Committee For Smart Growth, presented the Sedalia City Council with facts and figures Monday night in an annual report.

In 2017, a total of 3,424,380 recyclables was collected in Sedalia. That compares to 2,130,380 pounds collected in 2016, Wade said.

The increase in recyclables amounts to a 850,000-pound reduction in trash, he noted. According to Wade, the City collects roughly 18- 20 million pounds a year, adding that the recylables collected were more than just a drop in the bucket.

“We pay by the ton that goes to the landfill, so the less we're collecting, the less we're paying, so it helps everybody,” Wade said of the overall decrease in trash collected.

A total of 261 permits were issued to non-residents who want to bring their recyclables to the Sedalia site on Route U. The cost per permit is $64.

Wade noted that the Sedalia Tree Board is planning an Arbor Day celebration at noon Friday at Clarendon Road where the Katy Trail interects. A dedication of a mini-park there will be featured.

Wade's report was met with applause by Council after he finished.

The Smart Growth presentation preceded the Council's regular meeting, which lasted about 10 minutes. In regular session, the Council approved annexation of land owned by Baykal Properties that is contiguous to the existing corporate limits of Sedalia. The land will be where Sedalia's newest Dollar General will be built, at 4949 E. 50.

Councilwoman Jolynn Turley was absent from Monday night's meeting at the Municipal Building.

Council adjourned to closed-door session following their regular meeting.
