Sedalia Bar Owners and Citizens Fill the City Council Chambers to Protest Smoking Ban

The Sedalia City Council met at City Hall last night (Oct. 7), and once again, it was not a quiet meeting. A large number of bar owners, and other citizens filled the chamber to wait their turn at the microphone in order to protest the smoking ban, a ban which many business owners said has nearly put them out of business.

Student Organization at the University of Central Missouri Raises Awareness About Human Trafficking

International Justice Mission's (IJM) student chapter at the University of Central Missouri raised awareness about human trafficking with their "Choose Freedom" event outside the student Union on Wednesday and Thursday (Sept. 25-26). The IJM chapter had students paint their hands red and press their fingerprints against a big, black "X," which stands for the "End It Movement," a global effort to stop modern day slavery.

Bottom’s Up Hosting “Burn the Ban” Party, Counting Down to Sedalia’s Smoking Ban

At 12:01 a.m. on Sept. 1, smokers will have to snuff out their cigarettes and bar owners will empty their ashtrays as Sedalia's smoking ban goes into effect. Although the ban passed with a 6-2 vote at a city council meeting last June, not everybody is happy about it. Bottom's Up, a Sedalia bar affected by the ban, will be holding a "Burn the Ban" party, counting down the minutes on Saturday night until smokers can no longer comfortably light up inside.

In what will be a history-making event for the University of Central Missouri, the White House staff today announced that President Barack Obama will visit the university to speak about the economy on Wednesday, July 24.

President Obama’s speech will take place at the large court area on the lower south part of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, 500 S. Maguire St., Warrensburg. The university is working with the White House team to accommodate as many people as possible. Tickets are free but are required to attend the event.
