Pettis County Fire Chief Mike Harding has imposed a burn ban in the Pettis County Fire Protection District until further notice, it was announced Wednesday afternoon around 2:45 p.m.

"The lack of moisture and dry conditions have made it hazardous for any burning of sorts," Chief Harding said. "Anyone burning will be subject to a fine."

He added that the Pettis County Sheriff's Office will soon be sending out a Nixle about the burn ban.

Pettis County fire personnel responded to at least 10 fires this past weekend. And again on Thursday morning around 9:30 near M Highway and 28th Street after the burn ban was put into effect.

The Sedalia Fire Department and City of Sedalia have also issued a burn ban effective immediately, prohibiting open burning in the city limits of the Sedalia.

It is illegal to burn inside the city without a permit from the fire department and during this burn ban, permits will not be issued.

This ban also includes fire pits, of all types.

Notice will be given when the ban is lifted and permits are being issued again.
