Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. surprised every Ghost Rider fan with the reveal behind Robbie Reyes first taking on the mantle of Vengeance, including a surprise cameo that went mysteriously unnamed. Now, stars Clark Gregg and Reyes himself, Gabriel Luna tip their hands toward the Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider indeed having sped through “The Good Samaritan.”

You’re warned of burning Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spoilers from here on out, but where Season 4 had previously nodded to the Johnny Blaze identity more commonly associated with Ghost Rider, this week’s origin-exploring hour actually went so far as to depict a more traditional-looking Ghost Rider passing on his fiery talents to Robbie Reyes. The mysterious figure was clearly styled after Marvel’s Johnny Blaze, the “original” Ghost Rider, but only referred to within the hour as “The Good Samaritan.”

Might that have been Marvel TV’s way of leaving a little wiggle room, so as to keep Johnny Blaze open for separate projects? Cast tweeting about the episode didn’t quite confirm the character as Blaze either, though Gregg at least responded to one fan about the MCU having the “original” Ghost Rider:

Gabriel Luna too seemed to share his excitement through artwork from the All-New Ghost Rider comics, which feature Reyes teaming up with none other than Johnny Blaze.

As we said, it’s possible that Marvel TV deliberately intended to obscure the “Good Samaritan” identity for future continuity, but there’s equal chance we’ll meet the mysterious figure later in the season. Not to mention, the previous episode’s easter eggs deliberately pointed toward the “Quentin Carnival,” which has long been associated with Blaze’s origin.

We’ll see if cast and crew come up with any more solid confirmation, but might Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. go any more in-depth with the original Ghost Rider?
